Basic Sailing

Heading over to the West River for the Wednesday night races.

The crew is ready to go.

We're a pretty relaxed team.

It was nice to be back on the water.

Calling All Crew

My husband picked up the boat yesterday from the repair yard. WesterRoss is back in the slip and ready to go with it's new stainless steel shaft. I don't think I can bend this one. Wednesday night here we come.

Surfing

I was visiting other blogs and found a number of great posts by Carol Anne on Five O'Clock Somewhere. (My daughter will soon call and tell me the proper way to site someone else's blog but at this point I'm clueless.) Carol Anne pointed out that many women are "in some sort of man's shadow like a wind shadow, a zone of bad air that keeps them from gaining full speed". My husband has provided clear air but a lot of men don't.
I had two women sailing with me who have far more years experience on a boat than I do, but their husbands are critical and in command on their boats and the women lack confidence. I find a lot of women who will not sail as their husband's turn into tyrants on the boat and they don't want any part of it. Two of my crew are not married, not experienced, but learning quickly as they don't feel any restraints. Our coach doesn't criticize.
Now if I can only figure out what to do with my clear air.

Still Grounded

My husband and I went over to the sailing club last night. H got some advice on fixing the boat from some crusty old sailors. They commented that you can't expect to have a boat without breaking it. Meanwhile I'll sit on the front porch and watch the other boaters go by.

In Irons

I broke the boat. During the trials and errors of trying to back the boat into the slip during our last Wednesday night outing I managed to do something to the transmission/shaft or whatever. Husband will have to haul the boat to check it out. Bummer!

Despite the bad news we did manage to have a beautiful sail yesterday. The sailing club was having a fun race and although we didn't make the start on time (couldn't motor over) we completed the course. It was nice to have husband/coach back as skipper and helmsman and I was glad to be working the sails. Great chicken salad, bread and brownies rounded out the day.
